Most web hosting companies use either one of two operating systems on their servers either Linux-based hosting services or Windows-based hosting services.
Linux: Linux supported almost all open sources like, PHP, Joomla, Wordpress etc. Linux do not support the Microsoftt products. Linux is the most popular operating system for web servers So unless you have websites which need specific Windows applications, Linux is the preferred choice.
Windows: Windows does support open source but not like Linux, it has many limitations. Windows do support the Microsoft's all products.
You should use a Windows web host if your web site has been built using Microsoft applications such as ASP, ASP.NET or will run Microsoft applications like Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL database.
