Below are the most commonly used DNS records and whay they do:

  • A - Used to map the domain name to the IP Address. IPV4 only.
  • CNAME - Allows aliases to be used so that the server can be known by more than one hostname.
  • MX - Mail exchange records, used to route mail through your domain.
  • TXT - Mostly used for information about the domain.
  • SPF - Like TXT, mostly used for information storage. Also in same format as TXT.
  • AAAA - Used to map the domain name to the IP address. IPV6 only.
  • NS - Nameserver records, used to state the authoritative nameservers for the domain.
  • SRV - Generalized service location record, used for newer protocols instead of creating protocol-specific records such as MX
  • LOC - Specifies a geographical location associated with a domain name
